All our frames and forks are tested continually to meet or exceed (in some cases, well exceed) EN standards 14764, 14765, 14766 and 14781 as well as the new ISO 4210 standards. We conduct these tests at our frame manufacturing facilities, but we also use EN accredited testing laboratories such as Intertek and SGS to verify the results of our own tests. If these tests aren’t telling us everything we want to know about our bikes, we increase the loads and cycles, or we determine another way to test. Where current hydraulic testing machines, jigs and hardware aren’t up to the task of emulating some of the forces and impacts our bikes might be subject to, we’ve designed our own.
We relentlessly cycle test for fatigue from pedaling and torsional forces on every single frame size, with deflection tests for stiffness at every point of the frame. Brutal impact tests with massive weights dropped on fixed frames or forks are performed. Then reversed, with weights attached to the frame, the frame hoisted to a given height depending upon product type, then released.
This destructive testing is enormously instructive and important. And it is in continual process. But it’s our ongoing non-destructive testing of frames and forks fresh off the factory floor that’s just as vital.
For our carbon fiber frames, EVERY frame is weighed to make sure it’s neither resin rich nor resin deficient. We also measure the stiffness of each frame in 6 critical areas as a check on lay-up production. Each deflection test must fall within 5% of the standards our machine and field-testing have established. This weighing and stiffness deflection testing guarantees every single frame we produce meets all Jamis manufacturing protocol and will
deliver the ride qualities we defined and demand.
Many cruisers weigh well north of 40 pounds. Not so with the Earth Cruiser. Because nothing gets more uncomfortable faster than having to pedal more weight than necessary, we’ve pared as many grams from the Earth Cruiser as we could. Starting with the lightweight aluminum frame and a parts pick that’s nearly all lightweight alloy parts. The result is a 29 pound Earth Cruiser 1 that’s pure joy to pedal.
Many of the parts specified on our Earth Cruisers are made of aluminum to save weight, but also to help preserve the finish of the bike. Aluminum parts include the seat post, seat clamp, stem, rims, front hub, kickstand and crank arms (EC3 and EC1). We’ve even specified a silver-plated chain on the EC3 and EC1 that doesn’t just look great, it’s way more rust-resistant than standard carbon steel chains.
Our cruise-control handlebars were designed to promote a comfortable no-weight-on-the-wrists riding position. With just the right sweep and rise, these handlebars meet the rider’s hands without requiring a forward bend at the waist, relieving pressure on the back of the neck. Handlebar width has also been carefully calculated so that when steered from left to right it does not contact the rider, unlike many other cruiser-style handlebars.
Our Earth Cruiser saddles are not just great looking, they’re extraordinarily comfortable as well. Though the size and shape is clearly generous, we’ve also molded a channel into the top of the saddle to relieve sitting pressure and use high-quality memory or polyurethane foam for the supporting mattress. Memory foam (on the EC1 and 3), was originally developed by NASA and is now used extensively for medical applications. It is much denser than the foams ordinarily used in saddles, which makes it more supportive and more comfortable.
Our comfort tires have been designed to roll smoothly on pavement, but offer a large 2.125” footprint so that rides on park paths can be managed securely. The additional benefit of that big footprint is larger air volume in the tire and tube, which results in lower air pressure for a more comfortable ride than tires with smaller volumes and higher air pressures.
Our Earth Cruisers pedals offer a thermoplastic elastomer insert on both sides of the pedal surface that keeps shoes and sandals from slipping when soles or pedals get wet. These inserts also make barefoot pedaling comfortable.

TOP FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
The Earth Cruiser's lightweight & durable aluminum frame is easier to pedal than steel, and offers corrosion and rust-resistant attributes in coastal salt water conditions.
Our compact cantilevered cruiser design offers the lightest possible weight, with 4 sizes assuring a better fit for a more comfortable and secure ride.
Our traditional seat-tube-centerline crank position offers the most comfortable pedaling position on all terrains. It's also more stable and easier to pedal from a stop, and is easier to pedal when out of the saddle than crank-forward designs.
Shimano's 3-speed hub offers near maintenance-free gearing options with the simplicity of single speed coaster brake stopping.
All Earth Cruisers feature a near all-alloy parts list -- alloy micro-adjust seat post, alloy stem, alloy seat post clamp, alloy front hub, alloy rims, alloy kickstand -- all of which add value, eliminate rust and reduce weight for an easier to pedal, more comfortable ride.
