Race report
I've been excited about getting the 2007 season off and running
for quite some time now, and even more so when I found out that
I would be representing the AEG-Toshiba-Jetnetwork team.
Winston David and I both knew from the past that this race would
be aggressive from the gun, but knew that it wouldn't be a problem
after recently returning from our training camp in Athens. Everyone
was pretty excited to race it definitely showed, as a three man
break including myself and two others went clear only three laps
into the race. After being away for probably only two laps a chase
group of around 12 made contact. A few of the riders included in
that group were Winston, Shane Braley, Dan Larson, Jason Snow,
Ryan Saylor, and James Sweeney. With the break being so large I
figured that we would have a few people looking for a free ride
on the back, and that is exactly what ended up happening. Luckily
there were some people willing to work, so we dangled 10 to 15
seconds in front of the field for around 8 laps before finally
going clear.
With around 12 laps to go Winston brought to my attention that
Cycle Science was working hard to keep the pace high and to bring
back anyone looking to get away, as they had their sprinter Jason
Snow resting on the back. We realized that our best chance at beating
Jason was to not mess around with a bunch sprint, so we opted to
begin our attacks early. As we alternated our attacks Snow's teammates
began to tire, and with 5 laps to go everyone in the break seemed
fatigued. A rider began to casually ride off the front, and I figured
that I would cover it just to be sure. The break turned out to
have no chase left in their legs and the two of us quickly opened
up a large gap, and were working well together. With only a half
a lap remaining I realized that two riders had attacked the chase
group behind us and were closing fast. After bringing this to the
attention of my break away companion he immediately decided to
attack. I jumped on his wheel and took a peek underneath my arm,
realizing that Winston was on the wheel of James Sweeney, and that
they were the two riders who were closing quickly. James and Winston
made contact in the final corner with only 200 meters to go. I
decided that it would be best to keep James from getting any sort
of recovery and launched my sprint immediately. As I crossed the
line I saw Winston out of the corner of my eye. He easily came
around the other riders to score a 1-2 for AEG-Toshiba-Jetnetwork.
It was great to get out there and
not only test my fitness but also my Louis Garneau clothing and
Jamis Xenith Team bike, both of which performed far beyond my
expectations. I definitely think that this is a precursor to
the rest of the season, and that the AEG-Toshiba-Jetnetwork team
will also perform far beyond many people’s
expectations
