ABOUT THE BIKE
BUY IT IF FORGET IT IF
Lightweight tank. Super stoppers. Affordable. Gauche treads. Your instincts demand you to ride to the four corners of the globe, but your wallet tells you it has to be on just one bike. Either extreme (up or down) motivates your riding.

JAMIS KOMODO
By Andrew Juskaitis

PROFILE
One of the growing breed of long-travel hardtails - built for rugged riding without the weight, efficiency or durability compromises you get with full-suspension.

BEST THING ABOUT THIS BIKE
Comfortable, control-oriented ergomonics. Disc brakes, ample front suspension and laid-back positioning allow the Komodo to commit acts of courage previously regulated to full suspension bikes.

WORST THING
Loud, two-tone design of the Hutchinson Alligator tires might be all the rage at Hamburg discotheques, but we'd appropriate the lighter (and less colorful) Python versions, which are more suited to varied conditions.

MINOR QUIBBLES
Seatpost quick-release would be nice. And the questionable reliability of the Real Design rear hub. (Our cassette body froze up after one stream crossing.)

BRAGGING RIGHTS
Able to hold its own in almost all conditions, this bike gives you the essence of a mountain bike - light, durable and adventurous - without breaking the bank.
