Using the same frame as the $3200 Dakar Pro, Jamis’s Dakar Comp might be one of the best values of 2003. A swing-link Four-bar linkage design provides 3.5 inches of rear wheel travel for the entry-level cross-country racer looking for a bike that’s part-time race and part-time play. An impressive component list includes a smart mix of Shimano’s Deore, Deore LX and Deore XT drivetrain parts - right where they should be for the price. Variable-terrain Hutchinson Python Gold Elite tires are certainly race-ready, while the Dakar Comp’s Manitou Black Elite fork can be switched from cross-country aggressive 80mm to a free-ride 100mm with the flick of a switch. The fork’s lock-out is just the thing for aggressive sprints and long grinder climbs.
